Piia T. Hanson, MSPH, a native of Texas, received her undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana.   She began her career as a research scientist at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., studying the role of the beta cell in the pathophysiology of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. After 10 years in academic research, Hanson decided to pursue a master of science in public health (MSPH) at Meharry Medical College. She was selected as one of 10 students in the first cohort in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College Health Policy Certificate Program. She is interested in policies that address racial disparities in health-related outcomes. Hanson will complete her M.S.P.H. in May 2011.
