Kynna Wright-Volel, PhD, RN, MPH
An internationally recognized expert on child health disparities, health promotion and obesity prevention, Kynna Wright-Volel, PhD, RN, MPH, is an assistant professor and RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar at the University Of California, Los Angeles School of Nursing. She serves as the 2009–2011 chair-elect of the National League for Nurses’ National Education Advisory Committee, as a member of the American Public Health Association’s Board of Governors Equal Health Opportunity Committee (2009–2012), and as a section leader for their Maternal Child Health Section (2010–2013). Much of Wright-Volel’s research has focused on the use of community-based participatory research efforts to prevent child obesity among medically underserved populations and areas. She has been recognized for her leadership and scholarly activities and has received multiple commendations for her innovative research, including the Office of Minority Health’s Community Trailblazer Award, the National Black Nurses Association’s 2010 Nurse Researcher of the Year, and the 2009 MCH Young Professionals Award from the American Public Health Association.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program has granted me the opportunity to gain additional skills, tools and knowledge to develop professionally as an academician, scientist and researcher. Through the local and national mentorship program, and my scholarly activities, I am expanding my understanding of relevant health care systems and health policy, and learning how to broaden my research to tackle health disparities caused by sociopolitical determinants. Through the closely knit network of program members, scholars and advisers, I am growing personally and professionally into a nursing leader who will make a positive difference in the lives of underserved children and families.
