From 2006 to 2012, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded the Physician Faculty Scholars program, which provided promising young physicians who had begun their academic careers the opportunity to carry out research to improve health and health care. A total of 60 junior faculty were selected as program scholars. In addition, five physicians were selected as Veterans Affairs (VA) Faculty Scholars as part of the Class of 2012. The National Program Office is located at Stanford University.

As the program comes to a close, a powerful new publication tells the story of how the initiative filled a critical gap in physician career development. It details the program’s origin, successes and challenges, and the lessons learned that can be applied to other programs. Perhaps most importantly, it tells the stories of the scholars, showing the difference that this program made in their lives as well as in the lives of others.
