Welcome to the RWJF Leaders diversity marketplace, where we IMAGINE Tomorrow...the future begins today.
By 2050, America will be transformed from a majority white population to a nation where half its residents will be non-white. The ranks of health care professionals are not keeping pace with the changing demographics.
- Only about 15 percent of doctors, 9 percent of registered nurses, and 12 percent of dentists are persons of color.
- Similarly low numbers are reflected in other important areas of health research and policy.
- This underrepresentation is particularly significant in communities of African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indian/Alaska Natives and low-income and rural populations.
- Each group disproportionately lacks access to quality, affordable health care and disproportionately suffers disparities across a wide range of diseases and health outcomes.
Attracting and preparing individuals from diverse backgrounds for careers in health and health care is an essential step toward eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities, and also a contribution to improving the nation’s overall health.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is at the forefront of providing training, mentoring and opportunities for new and innovative multidisciplinary approaches to improve the health and health care of all Americans. This ultimate goal is achieved when health care leaders and professionals mirror the rich and changing tapestry of our nation.
