My Investigator Award in Health Policy Research provided the resources I needed to complete a research project on an innovative topic that crossed disciplinary boundaries. I investigated the relationship between the new race consciousness in genomic science and biomedical research and the debate over race consciousness in law and social policy. Through the program’s annual meetings, the award also gave me an unparalleled opportunity to present my ideas to a group of leading health experts and to learn about their cutting-edge research. The result was not only the publication of my book, Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century, but also enduring connections with an extraordinary network of scholars who seek to have a positive impact on health policy.
